In spring 1999 the Autonomous Community of Madrid’s first ever Greenway was opened. Cyclists and walkers can now travel 49 kilometres of the old Arganda Railway route along the Vega del Tajuña (the Tajuña river lowlands) and enjoy a landscape which, in spite of its proximity to Madrid, still maintains a pleasant rural flavour while being accessible by a modern Metro train from the city centre.
