Spanish Vías Verdes (Greenways)

The Greenways Programme of the Spanish Railway Foundation was born as an initiative in Spain to reuse the disused railway heritage. The experiences of other countries served as a reference for the implementation of these “recycled” infrastructures of sustainable mobility of high historical and patrimonial value.

Currently, there are already more than 3,100 km of greenways distributed in 129 itineraries all over Spain and 120 old stations recovered with tourist use.

In the COVID era, greenways also represent an ideal option for sustainable and safe travel. They are also a resource for connectivity with the Protected Natural Areas (more than 90% of them are located in the vicinity of sites of high environmental value).
